Personality: To say that Paine is a little bit standoffish is like saying that snow is 'a little bit cold', or that Kefka is a 'little bit crazy'. She's not outright anti-social, but she sure as hell isn't going to go out of her way to make friends unless you have something to bring to the table-- and the only thing she's really interested in is intelligent conversation. She's got a very efficient sense of being, and is almost compulsive in her cleanliness-- both of her surroundings and of her words. She goes out of her way to say exactly what she means, which led her teachers from her earlier schooling to believe she was, if not a little precocious, a bit arrogant and holier-than-the rest of her peers. It's not that she thinks she's better than you, it's just that... well, actually, she DOES think she's better than you, if she's saying something similar. Or if not better, definitely smarter. She has no problem bowing down to higher intelligence, but you have to prove that to her first. Oh, and she's also a snarky, snarky girl. Honest to a fault at some points, secretive at others, it's never quite clear what she's thinking, which suits her JUST FINE.

Sexual Preference and Why:
Paine is unabashedly heterosexual, and not looking. This isn't to say that she hasn't had relationships-- she has, and she doesn't regret them, but... it's very hard to catch her eye and even harder to hold yourself up to the standards she'll hold you to. And those are second only to those she holds for herself. She's very much looking for perfection, and she's well aware she's not going to find it. Does she care? No, not especially.

Background:
Paine grew up as a ward of the state under Yevonite rule, an orphan. On top of that, having been born with a slight discoloration defect, she suffered from extremely sensitive eyes, especially to sunlight, and she burned extremely easily. As a child, this made her a bit of an outcast-- what kids want to play with someone who can't be out in the sun for any longer than an hour at tops, and not in the height of the day? Outcast, she spent the majority of her childhood studying Yevonite and Al Bhed culture in the lending libraries and watching spheres. What else was there to do? As a result, she became a bit of a movie buff, having resigned herself to an indoor life.
That was, until she was 17 and met a certain Al Bhed merchant who promised her he could do something about her defect. Willing at that point to see if anything would work, she agreed to try it. It half-worked, fixing her sensitive eyes and allowing her to stay out a good amount longer in direct sunlight, though she still burned horrifically when out all day. But with this newfound freedom, she was ready to spread her wings, as it were. Working out a pay schedule with Rin, she joined the Crusaders for the steady, if small, pay. For five years, she worked as a documenter and foot soldier for the Yevonites, rising to the rank of sergeant before having finally paid off her debt to both Rin and the state. Newly freed from her obligations with a great deal more experience, she looked at her options, and discovered a new program-- a few years of study and she could ascend to the ranks of the officers instead of the enlisted. Better yet, the military didn't really care as to what the studies were. So with her love of film and her eye on the huge pay leap available, she applied for Desai University.
